SEX SELLS, BUT WHAT ARE WE SELLING, EXACTLY?

by Alison Moran, YourSportsFan.com Women's Sports Director

On your newsstands now….Olympic swimmer and gold medallist Amanda Beard in the July 2007 edition of Playboy.

I have no business judging such an obviously personal choice, but I'll take a wild guess that Beard has opened herself up to double-entendre jokes for as long as she lives. I’ve heard at least two, and those were just from family members.

Who is Amanda Beard? At the tender age of 14, Beard made a name for herself at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta by becoming the second-youngest Olympic gold medal winner in history. Today, she is a seven-time Olympic medallist and a former world recordholder in the 200-meter breastroke. She is now in training for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Even the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) seems to applaud her self-promotion, noting on Beard’s bio that she “generated a tremendous amount of publicity prior to the Athens Olympic Games (in 2004) with photo shoots with FHM (appearing on the cover with Logan Tom), Men's Fitness, and elsewhere.” They have yet to mention her Playboy shoot. Semi-nudity, apparently, is okay with the USOC.  Which begs the question: if the Beijing Olympics is a success, does Playboy get credit?

Beard is hardly the first athlete to bare all for Playboy, or for calendars and posters promoting their sport, or for Sports Illustrated. As Rick Reilly pointed out in Sports Illustrated more than seven years ago, two-time Olympic gold medalist Katarina Witt has posed without figure skates. And she was not alone. The Australian women's soccer team, soccer phenomenon Brandi Chastain and 12 women U.S. track and field athletes, including middle-distance runner Nnenna Lynch and high jumpers Amy Acuff and Tisha Waller, and volleyball phenomenon Gabrielle Reece have posed in the buff. They are not alone. Male athletes, including basketball genius/oddball Dennis Rodman, decathlete Dan O'Brien, cyclist Lance Armstrong and football enigma Ricky Williams, have also posed in the altogether.

Arena Football, What a Rush PDF Print E-mail

Chicago RushThe lights go out. The crowd roars. The arena is lit merely by the lasers and graphics playing on the scoreboard hung above midfield. Fan Appreciation Night is underway at Allstate Arena as the Chicago Rush host the Dallas Vigilantes. Judging by the applause during pre-game introductions, the crowd deserves a night of their own

The "Let's Go Rush" chants started as Hohensee's squad took the field before kickoff and did not slow up until the game was officially over despite the outcome. The team showed their love to the fans by taking every moment they could to interact with them during every break. From races on the field to Grabowski, the team's mascot, high fiving the fans to even playing catch with some lucky fans, the appreciation was genuine. This family-friendly event was a hit with all ages. Whether you're five or sixty-five, the Rush and its personnel made sure to accommodate everyone.

I did a double take when this came cross the wires.  It appears to be the "reel" deal.  Gone Phishing maybe?

Gone fishingKNOXVILLE, Tenn. (April 12, 2010) – The University of Florida team of Matthew Wercinski of Gainesville, Fla., and Jake Gipson of Niceville, Fla., won the first National Guard FLW College Fishing National Championship on Fort Loudoun Lake on Monday after catching three bass weighing 7 pounds, 11 ounces for a three-day total of 10 bass weighing 29 pounds, 10 ounces. Hero & Zero of the Week PDF Print E-mail

We'll stay with the Olympics for two more Hero(s) of the week.   Steven Holcomb lead the US Bobsled team to their first Gold Medal in SIXTY years!    And him and his team were on the Letterman show last night, they even did the Top 10 list!     He's the 'Co-Hero' with Canadian Figure-Skater Joannie Rochette, who captivated most of the Viewing audience with her amazing Silver-Medal performance---just after her Mom had passed away.     Two MALE sportscasters said on TV they were teary watching her.    It seems like in every Olympics  there is some kind of wild story in Olympic Figure Skating--especially with the Women's Competition.  This year there was a positive story!
