DENVER– The Chicago Cubs today reinstated right-handed pitcher Carlos Zambrano from the restricted list and granted right-handed pitcher Bob Howry his unconditional release.
Zambrano made four minor league appearances since being placed on the restricted list June 29, holding the opponent scoreless in the first three (4.0 IP) before allowing three runs in 1.0 inning of work July 27 with Triple-A Iowa at Albuquerque. All told, he struck out five compared to one walk in 5.0 innings pitched in one game with the Rookie League Mesa Cubs and three with Iowa.
The 29-year-old Zambrano is 3-6 with a 5.66 ERA (35 ER/55.2 IP) in 22 games (nine starts) for Chicago this season. He began the campaign in the starting rotation before moving to the bullpen in late April. In 13 relief appearances, he went 0-1 with a 4.15 ERA (6 ER/13.0 IP), holding the opposition scoreless in 10 outings.
In five relief appearances from May 18-29, Zambrano tossed a total of-4.1 scoreless innings, while holding the opponent to a .077 batting average (1-for-13) before moving back into the rotation.
Zambrano last pitched for Chicago June 25, getting the start against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. He allowed four runs in the first inning before leaving the game, and was placed on the suspended list the next day.

For the HERO of the Week, how 'bout Nationals Pitcher Miguel Batista?! Tuesday night, a bunch of fans, (WAAAY more than usual) went to the Nats game because Steven Strasburg was supposed to pitch. However Strasburg had a bad shoulder, and a last minute decision was made to hold him out of the lineup. Miguel Batista took his place, and was booed by the HOME fans, before he'd even thrown a pitch! He pitched a decent game, and was gracious about it afterwards. He said he understood the fans reaction, that it was like expecting Miss America and getting Miss Iowa. Then either he realized or someone told him he had insulted Iowa and their beauty pageant winner, so he made a public apology----AND sent flowers to Miss Iowa! Maybe he saw a picture of her----she's definitely worth sending flowers to!!
For the ZERO, we'll choose Cowboys ROOKIE receiver Dez Bryant. I emphasize 'Rookie' because as a first year player he is supposed to do 'certain things'. Okay, some of this hazing can get out of line, no reason to tie him up to the goalpost and throw stuff at him while he is blindfolded. But a veteran receiver asked Dez to carry his luggage---and Dez flatly refused! I wonder what Dean Smith would have thought of that. Freshman were ALWAYS last on the 'ranking', getting water after everyone else, stuff like that. And I imagine a lot of teams do things like that. However evidently Dez is too good for that. NOT the best way for a Rookie to break onto a team and be respected by his teammates.
Happy weekend to all.

-- USA To Resume Training In New York City August 10 --
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 28, 2010) – Following four days of training and an intra-squad exhibition game that were held July 19-24 in Las Vegas, Nev., USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo today announced that 15 players had been selected as finalists for the 2010 USA World Championship Team.
Named as finalists for the USA World Championship Team were Chauncey Billups (Denver Nuggets); Tyson Chandler (Dallas Mavericks); Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors); Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder); Rudy Gay (Memphis Grizzlies); Eric Gordon (Los Angeles Clippers); Danny Granger (Indiana Pacers); Jeff Green (Oklahoma City Thunder); Andre Iguodala (Philadelphia 76ers); Brook Lopez (New Jersey Nets); Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves); Lamar Odom (Los Angeles Lakers); Rajon Rondo (Boston Celtics); Derrick Rose (Chicago Bulls); and Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City Thunder).
The 2010-12 USA National Team coaching staff is led by Duke University’s Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski, and features as USA assistant coaches Syracuse University’s Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim, New York Knicks head mentor Mike D'Antoni and Portland Trail Blazers head coach Nate McMillan.
The 15 finalists will reassemble Aug. 9 in New York City and train there Aug. 10-16. The official 12-man USA roster that will compete in the 2010 FIBA World Championship must be submitted to FIBA at the technical meeting that normally is held the day prior to the start of the competition.
“We had an outstanding week of training camp in Las Vegas and it is apparent we have a group of guys that are very focused, committed, and desirous of playing for USA Basketball. The identity of the team is still evolving, but it is pretty obvious we’re going to be very athletic; we’re going to be very strong in the back court; we think our shooting ability is underestimated, we think we’ve got a number of people who can shoot the ball; and so we’re pleased with our progress to date,” stated Colangelo.
“We have much more to do in New York and in our upcoming exhibition games as we proceed toward Turkey, but we’re excited and enthusiastic about our chances.” added Colangelo.
“We’re really pleased with the week we had in Vegas. There’s such a great spirit to be on the team and to bring these 15 players to New York, they’ve all earned the opportunity to be there. We have an unconventional team that we’re forming, but it’s still one that is built with great spirit, athleticism and a little bit more guard oriented than most U.S. teams have been,” commented Krzyzewski.
“I like their attitude. They all want to be on the USA team. They want to learn and they’re willing to sacrifice for what’s best for the whole. There’s a great, great spirit of cooperation, an unbelievable spirit of cooperation,” Krzyzewski added.
USA Basketball opened its 2010 National Team training with a July 19-24 training camp in Las Vegas. The Las Vegas camp was concluded July 24 with the 2010 USA Basketball Showcase, an intra-squad exhibition that saw the USA White Team defeat the USA Blue Team 114-96.
Following a short break, the selected USA finalists will reassemble in New York City to resume training and to take part in the first-ever World Basketball Festival, a four-day celebration of the game’s performance and culture hosted by NIKE, Inc. and USA Basketball in New York City. The USA World Championship Team hopefuls will begin their training Aug. 10 with a 12 -3 p.m. (EDT) practice at John Jay College. The World Championship Festival tips off Aug. 12 in Radio City Music Hall with a special showcase featuring the USA Basketball World Championship team finalists and moves uptown to Harlem’s legendary Rucker Park basketball courts on Aug. 13 and 14.
The Festival concludes Sunday, Aug. 15, when the USA squad takes on France at Madison Square Garden,
1 p.m. (EDT), in the first game of an exhibition doubleheader. China will meet Puerto Rico at 3:30 p.m. (EDT) in the second contest. Tickets for the exhibition doubleheader, which start at $15, are available on the Web via www.Ticketmaster.com and www.thegarden.com, by phone at 1-800-4-NBA-TIX, and at the box office at Madison Square Garden.
In addition to the game against France at Madison Square Garden, the USA will play three world basketball powers in exhibition games, or “friendlies,” in preparation for the 2010 FIBA World Championship. In advance of that tournament, the Americans will meet Lithuania on Aug. 21 and Spain on Aug. 22 in Madrid, Spain, and play Greece in Athens on Aug. 25.
All of these friendlies are part of the new Global Community Cup, which will include all USA Basketball exhibition games played outside of formal international competitions. Along with the games, the Global Community Cup features a social responsibility element that will highlight USA Basketball’s commitment to giving back to communities in the U.S. and abroad.

The lights go out. The crowd roars. The arena is lit merely by the lasers and graphics playing on the scoreboard hung above midfield. Fan Appreciation Night is underway at Allstate Arena as the Chicago Rush host the Dallas Vigilantes. Judging by the applause during pre-game introductions, the crowd deserves a night of their own
The "Let's Go Rush" chants started as Hohensee's squad took the field before kickoff and did not slow up until the game was officially over despite the outcome. The team showed their love to the fans by taking every moment they could to interact with them during every break. From races on the field to Grabowski, the team's mascot, high fiving the fans to even playing catch with some lucky fans, the appreciation was genuine. This family-friendly event was a hit with all ages. Whether you're five or sixty-five, the Rush and its personnel made sure to accommodate everyone.

EASY choice for Hero of the Week. The New York Yankees, whether you love them or you hate them, (and I've done some of both!) are probably the most storied and successful franchise in sports history. And their most recent owner, George Steinbrenner, (who as everyone knows passed away a few days ago), was one of the most powerful and winning owners anywhere. Like the Yankees, he had a lot of good AND bad things about him, but one thing was always constant, he wanted to WIN, and expected nothing less. Many owners in sports today could take a lesson from that. Yes, he was difficult to work for, and had his moments, but he also did very good things, which at times were not talked about as much. Upon seeing a story about a Policeman or Fireman being killed in the line of duty, he would immediately send the widow a check, for their kids' college education. He did things like this frequently. Again, like him or hate him, he is the HERO of the Week.
For the ZERO, let's stay with baseball and choose the All Star Game, which has become just a glorified exhibition game, but for some unknown reason, determines which league has Home Field advantage in the World Series. Seems a strange way to do it, as opposed to which team has the best record, but they're trying to draw interest in it. I don't think it's working, this past week's All Star game had the lowest ratings in history.
